Blair didn't want to leave, but I pushed her out the door. I hated doing it. Her disappointed frown nagged at me long after she was gone, but she wouldn't thank me if I took her virginity and came after five minutes. Her spending the night is too much temptation. Even for me.

I talk for twenty minutes, pausing to answer the occasional question. While lecturing, I hand out worksheets. I finish my lecture and pair them into groups to start the practical portion of the lab.

Blair still hasn't shown up.

I debate whether to shoot her a text, but decide against it. She isn't the only one with boundary issues. Worry mounts in my chest as the needle creeps close to half an hour. She’d never miss class.

Finally, Blair jogs into class, looking mortified. Bright red patches shine on her cheeks as she joins me, hissing. "I overslept."

"You missed IR and NMR spectroscopy. Here's the worksheet."

"Oh no!" Blair takes it from me, eyes widening with despair. "I can't believe it!"

"There's still plenty of time to catch up."

"But I missed the lecture." She groans. "Ugh."

"Join the IR group."

Still looking like she shot a puppy, Blair stomps in the direction I point. Paul notices her arrival and tugs her into his circle of students. I silence the jealousy burning my guts. It's not right to hate the boy. He can't help it that she's young and beautiful. Besides, she won't be mine forever. What we have is temporary. A spark that could be coaxed into flame, if I wanted.

Do I want that?

The answer is always yes. I don't recall a time I felt strongly about a girl and didn't act. I believe in love, but we can't be together. Blair is my student. Even if I did the right thing and waited, there’s no guarantee another guy won’t step into the picture. Our arrangement only lasts until we have sex, and then it's over. She’ll find someone else. Once she's comfortable with sex, she won't have a problem with dating.

Stop it. Don't do this. Not again, Liam.

Sighing, I pull up walls between my heart and mind. I stroll the class and help students. I venture to the infrared group, venturing closer to Blair. She sits cross-legged, a thoughtful frown creasing her forehead.

Blank spaces fill her worksheet.

"Any questions, Blair?"

Her face smoothes when she looks up, her position reminding me of the one she was in last night.
